Chapter 12

Flack’s phone vibrated, and he worked it out of his pocket, answering it while still spinning around on the floor. Brooke was once again walking around him in the kitchen while Addy was cooking. The little girl was getting pretty good at walking without falling. He saw Smoke’s number and laughed when he answered the phone, “What’s up?”

“We need you to come in.” Smoke’s usual humor was absent, meaning Flack had been tapped for a job. He glanced up at Addy. “I’ll head in now.”

The line went dead, and he grabbed Brooke. “Work?” Addy put her spatula in the spoon rest beside the stovetop.

“Yes. I need to go. Now.” He handed the baby to Addy.

“Will you be back?” Addy settled Brooke on her hip.

“I don’t know. I’ll call as soon as I know what’s going on.” He rubbed his face. “This wasn’t supposed to happen until I could get you a medical power of attorney for her.”

“We’ll manage no matter what needs to be done. Be safe. You have two people who want you to come home.” She toed up and kissed him on the cheek. Flack pulled them both into a hug. “I’ll call as soon as I can.” He shot upstairs, grabbed his keys, put on shoes, and headed to the Ferrari.
